Former Paramilitaries Release Hostages

About 1,000 former Guatemalan paramilitary troops freed five hostages they had threatened to kill unless the government paid them for battling leftist rebels during the country’s civil war.
The former troops seized four journalists and a government driver to protest their exclusion from a controversial state compensation plan. They released their captives after the government agreed to study their claims.
