Sri Lankan Government, Rebels Set Date for Talks

Sri Lankan and rebel negotiators agreed to open formal talks in Thailand next month in an effort to end the island nation’s 19-year-old insurgency, in which at least 64,000 people have died.
Sri Lanka’s economic affairs minister, Milinda Moragoda, and Anton Balasingham, chief negotiator for the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam, agreed in Oslo to hold talks Sept. 12-17, said Norway’s deputy foreign minister, Vidar Helgesen.
