The World : Court Integrates Beaches

A South African court ordered the Indian Ocean resort of Port Elizabeth to open its beaches to all races, ruling that “whites-only” signs were invalid. The regional Supreme Court supported a city councilor and a member of Parliament who claimed the city council acted without proper authority when it passed a resolution in 1966 segregating the beaches of the nation’s 5th-largest city. The city said it intends to appeal the court’s decision. Meanwhile, two African National Congress guerrillas, Mzondileli Nondula and Mthetheleli Mncube, were sentenced to be hanged after their convictions last week on murder charges.
