Wildfire Chars at Least 25 Acres in Canyon Before Containment

An early afternoon blaze burned at least 25 acres in Black Star Canyon on Monday before fire crews contained the flames, officials said.
One firefighter was hospitalized for heat exhaustion, and about 50 people from a trailer park and several houses were voluntarily evacuated to Irvine Lake, said Capt. Stephen Miller, a spokesman for the Orange County Fire Authority.
The fire started about 1:20 p.m. near Black Star Canyon Road, just off Santiago Canyon Road, said agency Battalion Chief Greg Petersen. Officials were still investigating the cause.
The Fire Authority, the U.S. Forest Service and the state Department of Forestry and Fire Protection battled the two-alarm blaze for about 1 1/2 hours using hand crews, bulldozers and helicopters, Petersen said.
He said firefighters were able to contain the blaze quickly because the wind remained steady and the area’s canyons created natural barriers.
