Southland Projects Win Design Kudos

SAN FRANCISCO — An assisted-living community for seniors in Claremont, and a Palmdale “sustainable community” were among 25 Southern California building projects honored at the 38th annual Gold Nugget awards ceremony, held Thursday at the Pacific Coast Builders Conference here.

A panel of nine judges considered more than 600 entries for awards in 45 categories that honor achievement in architectural design and land-use planning for residential, commercial and industrial projects.

The design contest, the oldest and largest of its kind in the United States, was the highlight of the convention that brings together developers and related professionals from around the world.

The home of the year award went to Watermark-The Casa California. The 4,969-square-foot Newport Beach home, designed by Robert Hidey Architects Inc. and built by Taylor Woodrow Homes, features vast ocean views, a subterranean wine cellar and cabana.

The same building team accepted the award for best single-family detached home more than 5,000 square feet for Watermark-Casa Pacifica in Newport Coast. Carlton Ridge in Palmdale was named the sustainable community of the year, honoring the most effective ways to design and build an energy-and resource-efficient home. The project, designed by Bassenian/Lagoni Architects and built by Pardee Homes, features affordable homes with energy-saving measures that can reduce power bills by up to 30%.

Winning in the best affordable detached-home category was a collection of bungalow-style homes in Long Beach called Renaissance Walk. The judges wrote that the community, designed by William Hezmalhalch Architects Inc., achieved aesthetic and functional excellence at an affordable price.

William Hezmalhalch Architects also accepted an award for best detached home in fewer than 1,800 square feet for Westcott-Plan 3 in Ladera Ranch. The project, built by Richmond American Homes, boasts a large porch and expanded kitchen space.

Sunrise Assisted Living in Claremont, designed by Hill Partnership Inc., was awarded the best seniors assisted-living community. The 54-unit project involved restoring a 1912 Arts and Crafts-movement building, whose architectural style is echoed in the new housing. Units begin at $2,000 monthly and run to $4,000 monthly.

The Claremont McKenna College President’s House, designed by Hartman Baldwin, was named the best renovated or restored single home. The judges noted the successful blending of the home’s Craftsman architecture with contemporary elements.

“Thoughtful detailing ... for anyone who loves great architecture,” the judges wrote in their unanimous decision for the renovation award.

Half of the Building Industry Community Spirit awards went to Southern California projects. The award recognizes projects that meet the needs of a community’s less fortunate residents.

Local winners included Saint Joseph Ballet in Santa Ana, designed by McLarand, Vasquez & Partners and built by Camco Pacific Corp.; YWCA Transitional Housing in San Diego, designed by Golba Architecture Inc. and built by douglas e. barnett inc.; Emmanuel House in Santa Ana, designed by RNM Architects & Planners and built by John Laing Homes/WL Homes; and Sheraton Townhouse in Los Angeles, designed by Killefer Flammang Purtill Architects and built by Novatech Builders.
