Santa Margarita, Junior
Swimming
Demers, the only boy to set a Division I record at the Southern Section finals, broke the mark in the 100-yard butterfly. He won in 48.68 seconds, half a second faster than Brian Alderman of Santa Barbara in 1986 and the fastest high school time in the nation this year. Demers also won the 200 freestyle in 1:37.54 and led off Santa Margarita’s 200 and 400 freestyle relay teams, both of which finished second. Demers’ splits in the 50 and 100--20.91 and 45.31--would have put him in second in the finals of those individual races. All four of his times surpassed All-American standards.
