Navratilova’s Retirement Tour Won’t Include the U.S. Open

Four-time winner Martina Navratilova will not play in the U.S. Open, which begins Aug. 29 in New York, because she is not ready for the two-week grind of Flushing Meadow.
“My 37-year-old body is telling me to play on indoor surfaces, and I think it’s time to listen,” Navratilova said in a statement released Sunday. “I want to spend time preparing physically and mentally for the . . . other tournaments I will play before I retire.”
Navratilova, who will retire in November, failed in her bid to win a 10th Wimbledon title last month when she lost in the final to Conchita Martinez. She played in the Virginia Slims of Los Angeles last week, losing in the third round to Ann Grossman after playing about five hours of singles and doubles the night before.
Navratilova’s next scheduled tournament is an indoor event at Filderstadt, Germany, starting Oct. 10.
