IRVINE : Proposals Sought for Youth Service Grants

The city is looking for organizations and individuals interested in running two youth service programs.

The City Council recently allocated $100,000 to fund expanded recreational activities and a parent-training program aimed at helping “high-risk” youths and their families.

People interested in applying for grants can pick up applications at City Hall. The applications are due Sept. 15. City officials hope to have the service providers selected by November, said Maureen Ybarra, Irvine’s community services superintendent.

Applicants are given broad leeway in creating their program proposals, Ybarra said.

The recreational programs, which are designed for youths in grades 4 to 12, could include anything from model-rocket classes to theater productions.

The city is also looking for a variety of proposals for the parent-training program. Last year, Community Services Program Inc. received a city grant for a parent-training service that dealt with such issues as family management, communication skills, anger management, conflict resolution and discipline.

City officials said applicants should have at least two years of experience providing social services.
