HUNTINGTON BEACH : Silva to Run for Supervisor in ’94

City Councilman Jim Silva on Friday declared his intention to run for the Orange County Board of Supervisors in June, 1994, when Supervisor Harriett M. Wieder is expected to retire.

Silva could encounter opposition in a race for Wieder’s 2nd Supervisorial District seat from council colleague Linda Moulton-Patterson. Moulton-Patterson, who already has held a fund-raising event, said she is still undecided whether she will run.

A third Huntington Beach resident, businesswoman Haydee Tillotson, is also considering entering the race. Tillotson, who was appointed to the Orange County Planning Commission by Wieder in March, said she will make a decision in January.

Silva, 49, a longtime economics and history teacher at Los Amigos High School in Fountain Valley, made his announcement at an Irvine luncheon attended by county and business leaders. It was hosted by Supervisor Roger R. Stanton and former Huntington Beach Mayor John Erskine.

Silva was elected to the City Council in 1988 and 1992 and served as mayor last year. He said his experience and leadership training on the council would help him deal with two major issues facing the county--budget problems and public safety concerns.

“I’ve returned calls and answered mail and always listened to both sides,” he said.

Silva last year announced that he would run for Congress but pulled out of the race before formally taking out nomination papers.

Silva was born in Fullerton and raised in Garden Grove. He graduated from San Jose State University. He’s been a resident of the 2nd District for 42 of his 49 years, he said.
