Newspapers Join to Study Electronic Media: The Massachusetts Institute of Technology Media Laboratory announced that it will conduct research for a consortium of newspaper companies to find new ways to deliver the news electronically. The consortium includes Gannett Co., Knight-Ridder Inc., Times Mirror Co., Tribune Co. and Hearst Corp., as well as computer maker IBM. Among the technologies being developed at the laboratory is a personalized newspaper, in which certain articles will be given priority based on a reader’s interests. The research eventually could receive about $2 million annually.
