BOYS’ ATHLETE OF THE WEEK : David Martinez
- Share via
School: Gahr High
Sport: Baseball
Position: Pitcher
Class: Senior
Martinez allowed only one hit in 10 innings of work during two games as he helped the Gladiators to a perfect 3-0 San Gabriel Valley League record. He threw a no-hitter as the Gladiators defeated Downey, 5-1, then threw three innings of one-hit ball as Gahr defeated Lynwood, 3-0. The two games lowered his ERA to 2.25. He also is hitting .300. Coach Tom Bergeron said, “He really hits the ball hard. He is a good pitcher who could get a lot better.” Bergeron said he believes Martinez has the ability to play pro baseball if he works hard. Bergeron does know something about what it takes to make it in the big leagues. Last year, five of his Gahr High graduates were on Major League teams.
Other top performers:
Mike Greenlee, an ace pitcher for La Mirada High, threw a one-hitter as the Lancers defeated Mayfair, 3-1.
Nick Marchese went 5 for 7 and had five RBIs as St. Anthony High defeated Bosco Tech and Serra to stay atop the Camino Real League.
