Black South African dancers canceled plans Monday to perform at a Jerusalem arts festival, apparently fearing for their lives if they defied African National Congress orders not to appear, a festival spokesman said. Spokesman Ben-Zion Shira quoted a telegram from the Amampondo dance group as saying, “Due to political pressure in the form of a cultural boycott, Amampondo has not been granted the go-ahead to perform at the Israeli festival.” Israel has frequently been criticized by Black African leaders for its arms sales and trade with Pretoria.
