From the Archives: Big Surf at Redondo Beach
Jan. 18, 1988: A Los Angeles County lifeguard boat sits just out of harm’s way as storm driven wave crashes over the top of breakwater in Redondo Beach.

The large waves were not stopped by the King Harbor breakwater. Six guest rooms of the Portofino Inn collapsed into the water. About 25 other businesses were damaged. Also damaged were 40 boats, 17 cars, the Redondo Beach pier and several private docks.
