The Exploratorium, a kids’ science center that’s been a family destination in San Francisco since 1969, has closed its doors for three months in preparation for a reopening at a new waterfront spot.
The old Exploratorium, at 3601 Lyon St. in the Presidio, celebrated its move by offering free admission on its closing day, Wednesday, Jan. 2, drawing a record 9,755 visitors, a spokeswoman said. The new location, Pier 15 on the Embarcadero, is due to open April 17.
The new space will be 330,000 square feet, about three times the size of the old space, about six times the size of a football field. Admission will remain the same: $25 for adult non-members, $19 for children aged 6 and up.
