Long Beach: Discount on whale-watching tours as season opens

New Year’s Eve was a banner day for partiers--and for gray whales. Twenty-one of them were spotted off Southern California as they headed south to the warm waters of Mexico, the best sightings since the season began Dec. 1. This means it’s a good time to snag a discounted whale-watching ticket and go see them for yourself.
The deal: AmazonLocal Long Beach is offering vouchers that take at least half off the price of whale-watching tours. The sale price costs $18 a person (usually $39) or $35 for two (usually $78). It includes a two-hour tour and all the whales and dolphins you can see.
When: The offer is good until 11:59 p.m. Pacific time on Sunday.
Tested: The deal was still available online through AmazonLocal as of Tuesday. Once you buy a ticket, you have to make a reservation with Harbor Breeze Cruises; redeeming the voucher is based on availability. Tours leave daily, and there are some restrictions on weekend dates.
Remember, there’s no guarantee you’ll see whales, but you can track their migration at the American Cetacean Society’s Whale Census website. Volunteer spotters count whales at the Point Vicente Interpretive Center off the Palos Verdes Peninsula during southbound and northbound migrations. There have been 182 whale sightings since the season started, the website says, setting the stage for good whale-watching this year.
