San Francisco: Free event celebrates Korean festival

You get a little culture and you save a little cash. And you can enjoy being in another country without leaving this one. San Francisco celebrates Korean Culture Day on Sunday with a free festival, courtesy of the Korea Foundation, that celebrates chuseok, a harvest festival that the Korean tourism organization describes as the “biggest and most important holiday in Korea.”
You may not think of South Korea as an agricultural nation — it tends toward service and industry with only 6.4% of its population involved in agriculture, the CIA factbook says — but the festival’s roots are historically deep. Like many such celebrations, feasting is involved.
Besides food samples at the San Francisco celebration, this festival includes storytelling tours and demonstrations of the creation of lacquerware. The musically in-tune crowd can also hear some K-pop (short for Korean pop), one of the hottest genres in music today. Look also for the band wHOOL (12:30-3 p.m. at Samsung Hall). There will also be a K-pop screening room.
The event begins at 11 and continues until 4 p.m. at the Asian Art Museum, 200 Larkin St., San Francisco.
