Croatia lies just across the Adriatic Sea from Italy but has fewer tourists. Friendly Planet Travel offers a 10-day trip with a culinary theme that accents wine tastings and traditional meals from the Croatian capital to the coast.
The trip begins in Zagreb and tours the medieval Upper Town before heading to the seaside spa town Opatija. From there, visitors tour the ancient port of Pula, Rovinj and Livade on the Istrian Peninsula. Then it’s on to some hiking at Plitvice Lakes National Park where 16 lakes are connected by lush waterfalls. Other stops include historic Trogir, a UNESCO World Heritage site, the walled city of Dubrovnik and wine-tasting in Split.
The deal: The Discover Croatia tour offers a $300 discount for those who make a reservation before Oct. 17.
Date: The trip departs April 19 and May 3.
Price: $2,899 per person from Los Angeles, based on double occupancy. (After that date, it costs $3,199 per person). It includes round-trip international airfare from L.A., four-star lodgings, many meals, ground transportation and transfers, tours and a tour director.
Tested: I found availability for both trips at the discounted rate.
