New Orleans: Sounds of the season at historic churches

Visitors to New Orleans who want to sample its vibrant music scene and share in the holiday spirit can do both in a series of concerts at two of the city’s most noted churches.
St. Louis Cathedral, on Jackson Square in the French Quarter, is hosting 15 Christmas concerts through Dec. 20 that feature folk, jazz, gospel and classical music by artists such as the Preservation Hall-Stars (Dec. 6), the Faubourg Quartet (Dec. 10) and the St. Peter Claver Gospel Choir (Dec. 20). The hourlong concerts begin at 6 p.m. and are free.
St. Augustine Catholic Church, in the Treme neighborhood and the oldest African American Catholic church in the U.S., is hosting concerts Dec. 8, with the Friendly Travelers performing gospel music, and Dec. 15, with Germaine Bazzle and Friends performing jazz. Concerts begin at 4 p.m. and are free.
