Sugar-frosted flakes in Mammoth. Ski town digs out from several feet of new snow

Mammoth Lakes was digging out from under a storm that left several feet of fresh power on the slopes. The two-day blizzard started early Thursday and lasted into Friday. Totals reached 56 inches in 24 hours.

Skies were expected to clear Saturday and Sunday and remain clear through the week. More snow is expected just before Christmas.

North Lake Tahoe also took a direct hit, receiving nearly two feet of snow overnight. Ten more inches were expected before the weekend.

Closer to home, Mountain High in Wrightwood closed Friday, after receiving rain but no snow. Forecasts called for falling temperatures, which might mean snow later Friday and allow the mountain to start its extensive snow-making equipment. Skiers and boarders should check conditions before heading up for a planned reopening on Sunday.

In Big Bear, the two resorts were also hoping for a change from rain to snow. Snow Summit was open Friday, but Bear Mountain was closed. As with Mountain High, those heading up the hill should check conditions before leaving.
