Adventure travel means eating gorp and energy bars, right? Berkeley-based Backroads tour operator has a better idea: biking and hiking trips with Michelin-starred restaurants in mind.
Active Culinary Adventure tours come with reservations at top restaurants like Solbar in Calistoga, Calif.; Ristorante Villa Crespi in Italy’s Lake District; Hotel Marqués de Riscal in El Ciego, Spain; and L’Auberge de l’Ill in Illhaeusern, France (near Colmar).
Backroads, founded in 1979 by Tom Hale, has a close relationship with Michelin restaurants and reserves coveted spots for participants months in advance.
The active food tours are offered in Italy, France and the Napa and Sonoma area in California’s wine country. These trips cater to guests who want exclusive experiences such as cooking classes, exploring wine and food pairings, restaurant tours and introductions to celebrated winemakers, chefs and artisans.
Participants also visit with farmers, vintners, bakers and olive oil producers who share their expertise and local culinary knowledge.
Tours start at $3,198 per person based on double occupancy.
