A northern Nevada festival celebrates all things ukulele

The ukulele may be best known in Hawaii, but that won’t keep its fans from gathering April 30-May 3 in northern Nevada to celebrate the four-stringed wonder.
The Reno Ukulele Festival, at the Nugget Casino Resort in Sparks, will feature classes, concerts, jam sessions and more.
One of the highlights begins at 8 p.m. May 1. That’s when the Langley Ukulele Ensemble, a popular group of youthful performers from Canada’s British Columbia, takes the stage. Concert tickets cost $43.45, including tax and fees.
At 8 p.m. May 2, “The Lost Sullivan Show” will take guests back to the 1950s for a mock TV program featuring ukulele players. Tickets cost $41.25, including tax and fees.
Numerous events spread over four days will include sessions with titles such as “Dare to be Different” and “The Happiest Way to be Sad.” Limited passes remain, priced from $99 for one day to $175 for all workshops. They’ll be taught by some of the instrument’s best-known instructors and performers, such as Ken Middleton and Lil’ Rev.
Participants will be able to purchase of ukulele-related merchandise during a marketplace from 1-4 p.m. April 30 and 9 a.m. -5 p.m. Nay 1 and May 2.
