USC football: Tony Dungy says he passed on coaching job

Tony Dungy, who coached the Indianapolis Colts to a Super Bowl title, said Monday he was contacted regarding USC’s coaching job but that he had no interest in the position.
Dungy, appearing on “The Dan Patrick Show,” was asked if USC had called him.
“They haven’t but, as they say, representatives of the organization have called,” Dungy said. “Your people called my people just to see if you’re interested.”
“And?” asked Patrick.
“Not interested,” Dungy said.
Dungy said he could give USC some names of potential candidates but that he was “on to other things” after coaching for 28 years.
“College football is so different from the NFL,” Dungy said. “That’s what I think USC needs to do -- they need to get a great college coach, in my opinion.”
Patrick and Dungy discussed Texas A&M’s Kevin Sumlin, Vanderbilt’s James Franklin and Boise State’s Chris Petersen -- “That’s the guys I’d be looking for,” Dungy said -- along with Pep Hamilton, the Indianapolis Colts offensive coordinator who coached at Stanford.
