LONDON — American Marti Malloy reached the semifinals of the women’s judo competition after defeating Irina Zabludina of Russia in a tight match at ExCeL’s North Arena 2.
With the score tied, the 57-kilogram contest went to a referee’s decision.
Minutes later, in the men’s 73-kilogram division, Nick Delpopolo of the U.S. came out on the losing end of a similarly close quarterfinal match, falling to Wang Ki-Chun of Korea. The referees made their choice with the score at 0-0 through the golden-score round.
“I’ve fought him three times before and each time was a dogfight,” Delpopolo said.
Malloy will face the winner of a match between Hungary’s Hedvig Karakas and Romania’s Corina Caprioriu later Monday.
