Allison Schmitt claims silver with U.S. record in 400 freestyle

LONDON -- Not a bad batting average for the U.S. swimmers.
In four finals, they came away with four medals Sunday night, highlighted by Dana Vollmer’s world record in the 100-meter butterfly. The other women’s medal came from middle-distance star Allison Schmitt, who took silver in the 400 freestyle.
Schmitt’s American record time of 4 minutes 1.77 seconds was just 0.32 shy of the gold-medal swim by Camille Muffat of France. Muffat established an Olympic record, winning in 4:01.45.
The holder of the American record had been Katie Hoff, who went 4:02.20 in 2008. Hoff, in something of a surprise, did not qualify for the London Games.
The locals on hand at the Aquatic Centre were thrilled by the bronze medalist, Rebecca Adlington of Britain. She took third in 4:03.01, which was the second medal, overall, for Britain at these Olympic Games.
