The Lakers and newly hired Coach Luke Walton are finalizing a deal to add Jesse Mermuys as an assistant coach, according to NBA officials who were not authorized to speak publicly on the matter.
Mermuys, who had been the head coach of Toronto’s NBA Development League team, the Raptors 905, was at the Lakers’ offices on Thursday.
Mermuys was an assistant coach for two seasons under Toronto Coach Dwane Casey before he took over the Raptors’ D-League team.
Mermuys, who graduated from Walton’s alma mater, the University of Arizona, also was the camp director for Walton’s and Richard Jefferson’s basketball camp and he was the head coach/director of the Team Walton AAU program.
Mermuys would be the second assistant hired for Walton’s staff, joining Brian Shaw, who is the associate head coach.
