Pro golfer Michelle Wie has Olympics on her mind

After another difficult year on the LPGA Tour, Michelle Wie has set her sights on a more global goal.

The pro golfer wants to play for the U.S. team when her sport joins the official program at the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics.

“I went to the London Olympic Games last year and that really got me inspired,” she said. “It got me motivated.”

In the meantime, Wie can get a taste of the Olympic movement after being named as an ambassador to the Youth Olympic Games, which will be held in Nanjing, China, next summer.

International Olympic Committee members became acquainted with her several years ago when she traveled to an IOC session in Copenhagen to campaign for her sport.

Golf, absent from the Games for more than a century, will be among the 28 sports included in the Nanjing competition.

As for playing in the 2016 Summer Olympics, Wie will have to sharpen her game after finishing 49th on the 2013 LPGA money list.

“I’m going to do everything I can,” she said. “It’s one of my biggest focuses, making the American team for Rio.”
