WWE superstar John Cena, who has been the face of the franchise the last several years and its leading merchandise seller, underwent elbow surgery Tuesday and will be out of action for at least three weeks.
The surgery to remove bone chips was performed by Dr. James Andrews in Birmingham, Ala.
“He had begun to lose motion in his arm, and it had been locking up,” Andrews said. “I performed an arthroscopic procedure on his elbow and took out a bunch of spurs. Everything went really well.
“Cena’s rehab will start on Monday with trying to improve his range of motion and getting the swelling down,” Andrews said.
The time off will also give Cena a chance to rest his badly sprained left ankle, which he injured during Sunday’s “Night of Champions” pay-per-view event.
Cena is in the middle of a feud with WWE champion CM Punk. If Cena is out longer than three weeks, it could put the main event of WWE’s next pay-per-view, “Hell in a Cell” on Oct. 28, in jeopardy, as Cena and Punk were expected to wrestle then.
