This won’t rank among firsts in history alongside Neil Armstrong’s walk on the moon, but this weekend’s slate of college football games has produced the first 70-point spread in the history of Vegas.
Florida State is favored by 70.5 points over Savannah State on Saturday. According to Vegas oddsmakers, we’re attributing pregame.com here, that eclipses the 60-point spread Hawaii enjoyed over Northern Colorado in 2007.
Just to note, if you took Northern Colorado in that game, you won as Hawaii’s winning margin was “only” 57 (63-6).
We’re thinking Saturday’s final score will be left to Florida State coach Jimbo Fisher. Last week, Oklahoma State defeated Savannah State, 84-0. The Cowboys led 77-0 in the third quarter. The Savannah coach actually thanked Oklahoma State for not running up the score.
Cantor Sportsbook in Las Vegas is accepting bets up to $5,000 on the Florida State-Savannah game. Enjoy.
The good news for Savannah State is next weekend should be a comparative breeze. The school has a bye.
This won’t be the biggest wipe-out in college football history.
In 1916, Georgia Tech defeated Cumberland, 220-0. Georgia Tech’s coach, John Heisman, later had a trophy named after him.
