Torii Hunter, Mike Scioscia have lengthy closed-door meeting

Angels right fielder Torii Hunter had a lengthy closed-door meeting with Manager Mike Scioscia before Thursday night’s game against the Oakland Athletics, and among the subjects discussed was mixing in a few starts at designated hitter and an occasional day off to keep the 36-year-old’s legs fresh.

Hunter, who is batting .279 with a team-leading 13 strikeouts, no home runs and three doubles, said he requested the meeting, but he would not discuss anything else he spoke to Scioscia about.

“I refused to discuss what I talked to the manager about,” Hunter said as Scioscia walked past the group of reporters around Hunter’s locker. “We just talked about some DH days -- there will probably be a few in my future. Different stuff like that. It wasn’t nothing. We’re trying to get some guys in there.”

One of those guys is Mark Trumbo, the former first baseman whose transition to third base hasn’t gone as smoothly as the team hoped. Trumbo made three errors in his first two starts at third and has started there only once in 10 games since.

But Scioscia said Trumbo would likely get some starts in right and left fields on days Hunter or Vernon Wells served as DH or were off.

Trumbo has been shagging balls in both corner outfield spots but has made only one big league start in right field.

“I was told to stay sharp out there,” Trumbo said.

Trumbo, who was out sick Wednesday night, said he “felt a lot better” Thursday and started at DH against the A’s. Scioscia said Trumbo “has had some good workouts at third base and is getting closer to getting back there.” He also hinted that he wouldn’t hesitate playing Trumbo in the outfield.

“Mark has the potential to be an every-day first baseman, third baseman and corner outfielder,” Scioscia said.
