Newport Harbor was 2-3 in nonleague games, but none of that mattered on Thursday night in a Sunset League opener against unbeaten Los Alamitos.
The Sailors pulled out a 27-24 overtime victory when Cory Stowell caught his third touchdown of the night from quarterback Cole Norris, a 25-yard reception on Newport Harbor’s first play in overtime.
Los Alamitos (5-1) had taken a 24-21 lead by getting a 22-yard field goal from Tristan Frembling on its first overtime possession.
The passing combination of Norris to Stowell also connected on TD passes of 25 and six yards.
In the Baseline League, Rancho Cucamonga improved to 6-0 overall with a 37-18 victory over Etiwanda. Junior running back Khalil Muhammad had touchdown runs of 40 and 44 yards. Sophomore quarterback Angel Matute had a TD pass.
