City Section approves new rule allowing assistant to take over when head coach is ejected

The City Section Board of Managers approved a new rule on Monday that will no longer end games when the head coach is ejected effective with the 2017-18 school year.
Previously, when an official gave a basketball coach two technicals or ejected a baseball head coach, the game was immediately ended.
Under the new rule, an assistant coach can take over after a head coach is ejected. It’s similar to Southern Section rules.
“I’ll make sure that I am the first one to test out the new rule change,” said Sylmar basketball Coach Bort Escoto, who has been known to get a technical or two.
The City Section also moved forward to a new mercy rule in softball. In a first reading, the proposal is to end games when a team has a 10-run lead after 4 1/2 innings. It’s currently a 15-run lead. It remains to be seen if the proposal will be passed in time for the 2017 season.
