Boys’ basketball: Mater Dei pulls out 73-69 win over Santa Margarita

With starters MJ Cage and La’vette Parker unavailable, Santa Ana Mater Dei was ripe for a defeat on Wednesday night in a Trinity League game against Santa Margarita.
The Monarchs trailed through much of the game but rallied and pulled out a 73-69 victory. Rex Pflueger scored 27 points and had 15 rebounds. KJ Smith added 15 points and Bailey Stout 11. Mater Dei is 14-3 and 3-0 in league.
Chris Nordstrom became the winningest coach in Orange Lutheran history after his team’s 78-54 win over JSerra. He’s 209-104 in 11 seasons. Rogers Printup scored 18 points and CJ Hankins 13. Orange Lutheran gets Mater Dei on Friday. St. John Bosoco defeated Servite, 81-49. Vance Jackson scored 35 points.
Jayce Johnson, a 6-foot-11 junior who played last season at JSerra, then enrolled at Findlay Prep, became eligible on Jan. 9 at Santa Monica after moving back to Southern California. He made his debut, scoring 15 points in Santa Monica’s 63-46 win over Hawthorne.
In the Del Rey League, Cantwell-Sacred Heart defeated Gardena Serra, 72-56. Oregon State-bound Gligorije Rakocevic had 25 points and 17 rebounds. Balsa Dragovic added 21 points and Jacob Davison 16. Bishop Montgomery set up a showdown with Cathedral on Friday after beating St. Bernard, 67-24. Stephen Thompson had 19 points.
In the Rio Hondo League, La Canada defeated San Marino, 53-50. In the Tri-Valley, St. Bonaventure received 26 points from Thomas Frank in a 78-55 win over Carpinteria.
In the Moore League, Long Beach Millikan defeated Compton, 84-82. Long Beach Poly defeated Long Beach Cabrillo, 69-58.
In the Pacific League, Burroughs defeated Arcadia, 64-62.
