Boys’ basketball: Fairfax tournament begins on Monday

Steve Baik, the first-year Fairfax coach, is already raising expectations after his new team knocked off his old team, Chino Hills, on Saturday night to win the Maranatha tournament.
Now Baik will welcome Chino Hills and 14 other top schools to this week’s Fairfax tournament that begins on Monday. It’s usually one of the best summer tournaments.
The big question always is which top players will be playing or skipping the tournament. Crespi’s top two guards, Brandon Williams and Taj Regans, are unlikely to play. Coach Russell White likes to give his top players a rest because of all the AAU ball they are playing.
The opening games on Monday night: Corona Centennial vs. Maranatha, 3 p.m.; La Canada vs. LB Poly, 4:30 p.m.; Fairfax vs. Brentwood, 6 p.m.; Crespi vs. Orange Lutheran, 7:30 p.m.
The opening games on Tuesday night: Calabasas vs. Redondo, 3 p.m.; Santa Margarita vs. Alemany, 4:30 p.m.; Mater Dei vs. Loyola, 6 p.m.; Chino Hills vs. Santa Monica, 7:30 p.m.
The tournament continues through Saturday.
