UCI’s Kopf honored

UC Irvine senior Lexi Kopf, who scored two game-winning goals in a pair of tournament wins for the women’s soccer team last weekend, has been named National Player of the Week by the National Soccer Coaches Assn. of America.

Kopf, a forward, attempted just two shots in two games, but both found the net. The first came against Texas-San Antonio in a 2-1 victory on Friday. Two days later, her goal in the eighth minute stood up in a 1-0 triumph over then-No. 11-ranked Texas A&M in the final game of the Texas A&M Invitational in College Station, Texas.

UCI (2-0) is ranked No. 13 in this week’s NSCAA poll.

Lerman scores two

UC Irvine alum Griffin Lerman scored a pair of goals but the USA men’s water polo team fell to Macedonia, 10-7, in the bronze-medal game at the World University Games Tuesday.

Lerman started and played more than 22 minutes. Greg Enloe, another UCI alum, played more than 14 minutes and had one shot attempt.

Lerman and Enloe each scored single goals in an 11-10 semifinal loss to Russia on Sunday.

Lerman, who also had an assist, started and played nearly 16 minutes.

Enloe played nearly 14 minutes and also had one blocked shot.

The U.S. World University Games team is coached by UCI head coach Marc Hunt.

Robertson shines

Former Newport Harbor High water polo standout Leah Robertson scored two goals for the United States in a 14-4 loss to China in the gold-medal game of the World University Games on Monday in Schenzhen, China.

China, with largely the same team that won the silver medal at the recent FINA World Championships, built a 9-0 halftime lead and cruised to victory.

Robertson, who played at the University of Michigan, paced Team USA’s counterattack and was also effective on her sprints.

Fundraiser on tap

The Newport Sports Museum will be the site of the third annual USC 901 Reunion, Saturday, hosted by Kure It, a non-profit dedicated to funding innovative cancer research.

Newport Beach resident Paul McDonald, a former All-American quarterback at USC who went on to play in the NFL and who is currently the radio analyst for USC football, will be the master of ceremonies.

The featured speaker will be J.K. McKay, a former USC standout who played in the NFL and who is now an associate athletic director at USC.

The event also features live and silent auctions as well as an opportunity drawing with a grand prize of a men’s Tag Jeuer watch. A lucky live auction winner will be invited to the Titleist factory and fitted for a set of custom Vokey wedges.
