The South Coast Apartment Association donated the equivalent of 43,000 meals to the Second Harvest Food Bank to assist homeless families and others in Orange County who are struggling to make ends meet, officials announced today.
SCAA’s board president Lori Torres presented Second Harvest Food Bank director Joe Shoeningh a check for $14,400 at SCAA’s annual membership meeting at the Hyatt Regency Irvine last week.
“The generous donation will help us to serve the growing need in Orange County,†Shoeningh said.
Judy Legan, Executive Vice President of SCAA, said her association “could think of no more important cause†than feeding the hungry.
“The number of people who are homeless and hungry has risen significantly due to the ongoing recession,†Legan said. “We wanted to support the important work Second Harvest does in helping the homeless and low income families in Orange County regain stability and self sufficiency.â€
Demand for Second Harvest services has risen more than 30 percent in recent years.
SCAA represents more than 95,000 apartment homes in Orange and southern Los Angeles counties, including dozens in the Newport-Mesa area.
