Duarte finishes season at nationals

Fountain Valley High senior wrestler Anthony Duarte went 1-2 at the National High School Coaches Assn. Senior Nationals over the weekend, concluding his high school career.

Duarte, wrestling at 171 pounds, lost a close first match to Zach White of Oklahoma, 6-4. He came back for a 12-9 victory over Connor Finn of Minnesota before his tournament ended with a 9-4 loss to Gabe Hocum of Washington.

Duarte said he wished he could have done better, but it was a good experience for the senior, who finished fourth place at the CIF State meet last month to become the Barons’ first state placer since 1985.

He was trying to become the first Fountain Valley wrestler to ever place at senior nationals.

“It felt good to represent my school,” Duarte said.
