Michael James Howard Jr. of Newport Beach passed away on March 24th at the age of 92. Mike was born in New York City, the youngest of three children to Michael and Stephanie Howard.
Mike grew up in New York City attending Roosevelt High School and New York University. His first job was working for the Bank of New York. Later he accepted the position as West Coast District Manager of the national publication, Look Magazine. During his travels, he met his love, Ann and after a lengthy correspondence they married in San Francisco. In 1943 Mike entered the armed forces and served with distinction under General Douglas MacArthur in the South Pacific.
Upon returning from the war, Mike and Ann settled in Southern California and raised their four children. Mike entered the real estate profession and held the position as Vice President of Reliable Mortgage Company with offices throughout southern California. Later he held the position as Vice President of Sales for the Republic Corporation, a national direct mail marketing firm. But of all of his titles, Mike’s favorite was that of “Dad” to his daughter Dee and sons michael III, Thad and Ty. Throughout his life, Mike played sports and his love of tennis, baseball and football was passed on to his three sons. By his encouragement and example each found success. Mike also loved to travel. Mike and Ann took their family on many summer vacations visiting historical landmarks throughout North America. Later Mike and Ann traveled internationally. But when at home they enjoyed and supported a number of philanthropic organizations including Hoag Hospital and the Orange County Performing Arts. Last September they celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary. Mike is survived by his children, five grandchildren and one great grandchild.
A Memorial Service wil be held Saturday, 2 pm March 28 at Our Lady Queen of Angeles Catholic Church. 2046 Mar Vista Drive, Newport Beach, California.
Interment will be private, In Lieu of flowers, contributiions may be made to the Hoag Hospital Heart Foundation.
