Principal reviewing ‘Rent’ for possible production

The canceled play “Rent” may be getting one more chance to be staged at Corona del Mar High School.
While the school drama teacher and some alumni have said that Principal Fal Asrani canceled “Rent” because it contained depictions of homosexuality, the district said it was teacher Ron Martin who canceled it because he lacked the time to show her the script.
At first, Martin said the play could not be put on and began seeking out other plays like “You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown” in its place. But he has now gotten a rush copy of the “high school edition” of the play to Asrani and awaits a final decision from her on its content.
“The script was subsequently provided to the drama teacher,” said district spokeswoman Laura Boss. “He has since on Monday given that to the principal. She is currently reviewing it, and we anticipate a decision sometime this week.”
