Cowabunga on the beach in run-up to Surf City Marathon
- Share via
The weekend of festivities surrounding the Surf City Marathon in Huntington Beach focused on families Saturday with the running of the Cowabunga Beach Mile.
Participants in the timed run on the sand received a cape, finisher’s medal, race bib, timing chip and complimentary beer after the race (for those old enough to drink, of course).
Activities conclude Sunday with the marathon beginning at 6:30 a.m., a 5K at 7 a.m. , the half marathon at 7:45 a.m. and a beer garden from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.
The marathon’s 26.2-mile course runs from Pacific Coast Highway to Central Park.
Watching the races is free.
The event will cause closure of Pacific Coast Highway in both directions between Beach Boulevard and Warner Avenue from 1 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday. Detours will be in place, the city said.
