Caltrans to remove more unstable rocks along Laguna Canyon Road

Traffic will be limited on a portion of Laguna Canyon Road starting Wednesday as the California Department of Transportation works to remove unstable rocks and replace a damaged steel mesh blanket protecting the roadway.

According to the city, the slope stabilization work planned for the west side of the thoroughfare between Canyon Acres and Woodland drives is in response to a rockslide last month that blocked the inbound side of the roadway and damaged one vehicle following a rainstorm.

To allow for the work, inbound traffic on Laguna Canyon will be limited to one lane between Canyon Acres and Woodland. Construction is expected to take about four to six weeks, and minor traffic and noise impacts are anticipated, according to city staff.

The southbound lane on Laguna Canyon between Canyon Acres and Forest Avenue also will be closed Wednesday from 8 p.m. to midnight to accommodate additional emergency repairs on concrete barriers ahead of a potential rainstorm, according to Caltrans.

Laguna Canyon Road is one of only three roadways into the city.

Caltrans could not be immediately reached for additional comment Tuesday. The agency previously closed the stretch of Laguna Canyon between El Toro Road and Canyon Acres the day after the rockslide to remove unsteady boulders.
