Woman sentenced for hate crime

A white woman was sentenced to three years probation, 90 days in a residential alcohol rehabilitation and a 10-week anger management program for committing a hate crime against a Latino man in downtown Huntington Beach, according to the Orange County district attorney’s office.
Jennifer Renee Vanveldhuizen, 36, of San Diego pleaded guilty Tuesday to yelling racial slurs and profanity, then punching the man in the face while he cleaned and emptied trash cans in the Main Street area, prosecutors said.
Vanveldhuizen, who was intoxicated, was not provoked by the man.
If Vanveldhuizen fails to complete her probation, she will serve a year in jail, prosecutors said.
Vanveldhuizen’s felony sentence is expected to be reduced to a misdemeanor once she completes her residential treatment and anger management classes.
The district attorney’s office contended that the sentence was too lenient.
