Women’s group already looking to 2014 election

Although the next statewide election is nearly two years away, some groups are already lining up behind candidates who may face tough political battles.
Rep. Mike Honda (D-San Jose) has locked up early endorsements from President Obama and others in an effort to stifle a potential challenge from fellow Democrat Ro Khanna.
And Emily’s List, a national group that promotes women to run for political office, announced its backing of Atty. Gen Kamala Harris’ reelection bid and Betty Yee, who is running for state controller.
Yee could face a tough challenger in state Treasurer Bill Lockyer, who is raising money for a bid for controller next year. Lockyer, who has served as Treasurer since 2007, is barred by term limits from seeking reelection as treasurer.
Lockyer has a strong financial advantage over Yee, who serves as a member of the state Board of Equalization. But it’s clear that Yee is counting on backing from women to boost her chances.
“I am honored and proud to receive the early support of Emily’s List, affirming the importance of women serving in statewide offices across the nation,” Yee said in a statement issued by the organization.
