Readers React: In defense of ‘unfairness’ in the U.S. Senate

To the editor: Letter writer Darrel Miller comments about the perceived unfairness of a single vote in a Wyoming Senate election counting “65 times more than a vote in California.” (“Why Senate Republicans lack a popular mandate,” Readers React, Jan. 12)
Prior to the ratification of the Constitution in 1788, the country was effectively the “Disunited States of America.” The price of creating a more perfect union was to design a House representing population and a Senate guaranteeing equal voting representation among large (e.g. New York) and small (e.g. Rhode Island) states.
It’s called compromise, and without it today there would be no United States of America.
