Re “2 L.A. schools show their smarts,” April 28
Wow! Teams from two high schools in Los Angeles placed first and second in the national Academic Decathlon competition. For the third year in a row, Granada Hills Charter High School took the top prize. What an incredible accomplishment.
Was the governor at Los Angeles International Airport to greet the teams as they arrived home? Was the mayor of Los Angeles there? Will there be a big parade to honor their accomplishment?
What does this say about our support for academic achievement versus athletic achievement?

Immigrant-bashers have a real dilemma.
They question the loyalty of naturalized Americans because of the Tsarnaev brothers’ alleged perpetration of the Boston bombings. Meanwhile, The Times shines a spotlight on two Academic Decathlon teams from Los Angeles whose members have foreign-sounding names.
It is now for the readers to decide who’s the proper representative of naturalized Americans: the Tsarnaev brothers, or those bright L.A. high school students whose teams won the top two spots at the national Academic Decathlon competition.
