Letters: Putting the wraps on the shuttle

Re “Shuttle boosters feeling jettisoned,” Oct. 4
I am saddened to hear that Los Angeles is not celebrating the space shuttle Endeavour’s journey to the California Science Center on city streets with a parade.
If the shuttle’s flyover last month wasn’t indication enough, this is a major event for the city. Throngs of Southern Californians came together to celebrate human achievement and wonder.
This time, however, the public is being asked to stay at home. What a disgrace.
I hope the city and California Science Center officials reconsider and decide that this is a momentous enough occasion to pull resources and give the Endeavor the parade is deserves.
If we can fly people into space, surely we can figure out a way to come together and celebrate the engineers, designers, crews, workers and all the minds behind the Endeavor and the entire aerospace industry that has played an important role in Los Angeles.

First, 400 trees were cut down to make way to move the shuttle; now, the residents of those neighborhoods that sacrificed their trees are denied access to good viewing along the route to the California Science Center. When Endeavour finally “lands” at the Science Center, people will be charged money to see it.
What the heck is going on? This is not a good way to boost public relations. If taking trees didn’t anger those who live in the neighborhoods that lost them, this will surely do the job.
