Letters: The Republican Party line

Re “Romney says he’ll do what Obama couldn’t,” Aug. 31

Unheard of in modern political history and downright Orwellian is how the Republicans at their convention ignored their own most recent two-term president, George W. Bush.

In their collective group-think mode, do they believe that this will erase his eight-year tenure from our memories and rewrite the history of their time in office? No. I remember Bush and his terms in office. I also remember how America used to honor the position, if not the person. For that reason alone the Republicans’ lack of any reference to him is a disgrace.

It is also an example of how the Republican Party is engaged in a massive distortion of reality.

In his acceptance speech at the Republican National Convention, Mitt Romney said: “President Obama promised to slow the rise of the oceans and to heal the planet. My promise is to help you and your family.”

By mocking concerns about the environment and setting them in opposition to short-term prosperity, Romney presents a false choice. We must have the courage and imagination to do both these things. To do otherwise will be a fatal mistake for our children and grandchildren.

Am I better off than I was four years ago?

The economy was in free fall back then. I had to check The Times every morning to see if I still had a job to go to. Things have stabilized a bit since then — no thanks to the Republicans in Congress.

When I retire in 2014, my wife, who is younger than I am, will be able to buy affordable health insurance thanks to Obamacare. The answer to the Republicans’ convention question is yes.
