Letters: More to Thatcher than conservative lore

Re “What ‘the Iron Lady’ forged,” Opinion, April 9
Much as Republicans’ memory of Ronald Reagan as the consummate conservative is at odds with the reality of his policy positions, Jonah Goldberg’s nostalgia for the late British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher as a crusader against socialism is oversimplified.
As tough on liberals as Thatcher seems in retrospect, she repeatedly stressed the importance of her country’s single-payer healthcare system. Socialized medicine survived her years in power and remains an integral part of British culture, thanks in part to “the Iron Lady.”
