Malibu Councilman Peak gets probation in reckless-driving case

Malibu City Councilman Skylar Peak has been sentenced to two years of probation and 30 days of community service after pleading no contest to a misdemeanor count of reckless driving related to a Christmas Day accident.

Judge Lawrence Mira on Wednesday agreed to drop two other misdemeanor charges, of vandalism and hit and run, after conferring in closed session with Michael Shultz, Peak’s attorney. Peak was not present at the subsequent public hearing at Los Angeles County Superior Court in Malibu, where Shultz, on Peak’s behalf, entered a plea of no contest to reckless driving. Peak had earlier pleaded not guilty to all three charges.

Shultz said Peak was also ordered to pay a fine of about $1,200, to perform 10 days of beach cleanup in Malibu, to perform 20 days of community service at the Malibu High School Boys and Girls Club and to pay damages to the California Department of Transportation.

On Dec. 25, Peak drove his pickup truck over more than 400 feet of reflective markers on Pacific Coast Highway near Zuma Beach, authorities said. Investigators said he later abandoned his damaged truck. Shultz said Peak’s insurance would cover the costs of replacing the bent markers, which Caltrans initially estimated at $4,000.

Last year, Peak revealed that he had been diagnosed with bipolar disorder.
