3.1 quake strikes east of Salton Sea

A shallow magnitude 3.1 earthquake was reported Monday morning five miles from Niland, Calif., east of the Salton Sea, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. The temblor occurred at 5:43 a.m. Pacific time at a depth of 1.2 mile.
According to the USGS, the epicenter was 17 miles from Brawley and 30 miles from El Centro.
In the past 10 days, there have been no earthquakes magnitude 3.0 and greater centered nearby.
