TBS gets syndication rights for ‘2 Broke Girls’

TBS has landed the syndication rights to CBS’ “2 Broke Girls.”
The comedy, distributed by Warner Bros. Domestic Television, is slated to make its debut on the cable network in 2015. In the series, Kat Dennings and Beth Behrs star as two penny-pinching girls from different backgrounds -- who just happen to have a mutual respect for cupcakes and vagina jokes.
The show’s freshman season averaged about 11 million viewers, and it was the No. 1 new show last season. But it’s still unusual that its reruns have been sold this early in the game, as our sister blog Company Town points out.
“When ‘2 Broke Girls’ premiered last fall, it immediately found its audience and appeared to us to be a perfect fit for TBS,” said Michael Wright, president, head of programming for TBS, TNT and Turner Classic Movies (TCM) said in a statement. Wait. Let him explain why: “With its funny and endearing lead performances, a terrific supporting cast and sharp writing, ‘2 Broke Girls’ brings a fresh, contemporary attitude to the classic sitcom format. We believe ‘2 Broke Girls’ is poised to enjoy a long, successful run, and we look forward to adding it to the TBS lineup.”
TBS, which like Warner Bros. is a unit of Time Warner, has had previous success with another WB property, “The Big Bang Theory”-- even developing a nerd-centered reality series to build off its performance.
Another Warner Bros. show, “Mike & Molly,” is also being shopped to cable networks. Reruns of both Monday shows have already been sold to CBS-owned TV stations.
